Needing to practise making Espresso Martinis before New Year's Eve, we thought we'd make them with decaffeinated ground coffee as we were drinking them in the evening. Although the amount of vodka in BBC Good Food's recipe probably would keep us awake regardless. I have now halved the vodka!
Serves 2
1 tbsp sugar syrup (100g + 50ml water - makes more than needed)
50ml vodka
50ml freshly made espresso coffee
50ml coffee liqueur
Make the sugar syrup in advance. Stir the sugar and water in a small pan and to the boil. Turn off the heat then leave to cool. It makes several servings so only needs to be made the first time then stored in a little bottle for future cocktails.
Make an espresso coffee and leave to cool. I didn't measure mine, but found a full espresso cup worked about the right amount for two of us.
When the sugar syrup and coffee are cool, put all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice. Shake vigorously until the cocktail shaker feels icy cold.
Strain into two chilled glasses, and decorate with a couple of coffee beans if desired.
I have had a non-alcoholic version of this in Italy, called a Caffé Shakerato, and may make a less alcoholic version with just coffee liqueur tonight to hone our technique.
